The beauty world is in a lather about the safety of sulphates – a common ingredient used in shampoos that make them foam.
So why do sulphates have folks frothing? Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), the sulphate found in over 90% of shampoos, has been linked by the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database to organ toxicity and skin irritation as well as to environmental damage, since they are poisonous for plants and animals. While this sounds pretty scary, a series of tests conducted by the American College of Toxicology found that they pose no significant health risk to humans in small concentrations or if used for short periods of time, like during shampooing.
That said, sulphates are aggressive detergents. When washing your hair with a sulphate-based shampoo, it lifts the grease and grime off the strands and mixes it with the water so that it can be carried off down the drain. Sulphates are so good at what they do that they can excessively strip your hair of essential oils, causing it to dry out, lose shine and lead to split ends. They can also fade colour-treated hair, reduce the longevity of smoothing treatments like Brazilian Blowouts and double the dryness produced by chemical relaxers. On hair extensions, sulphates can break down the adhesive attaching it onto your hair. In those with sensitive scalps, they can trigger irritation.
With all these hazards, it’s understandable that you’d be worried about what products you wash your hair with. The solution is sulphate-free products. These still do the job of thoroughly cleaning your hair, but without drying and damaging it in the process. Because they help hair to retain its natural moisture, shine and durability are enhanced. Plus, they’re better for the environment.
One of the most celebrated haircare ranges on the market, Kardashian Beauty Hair, is not only sulphate-free, but because it is infused with Black Seed Oil, it nourishes, moisturises and fortifies the hair. What’s more, it has anti-inflammatory properties and reconstructs ravaged hair - ideal for if you’ve been inflicting your scalp and hair with sulphates.
“Black Seed Oil is highly rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins which dramatically enhance hair’s overall health, strength and lustre. For this reason, we include it in all of our products from our shampoos and styling creams to our paddle brushes and flat irons,” says Inge Peacock, Managing Director of Glamit, distributors of the Kardashian Beauty Hair range in South Africa. “By eliminating sulphates from our products and infusing them with Black Seed Oil, we offer quality care that delivers top results.”
